App-based e-verification states: days. Paper-file states: 1–3 weeks typically, plus RPO processing. The overall passport timeline is dominated by PV — which is why address-document hygiene and reachability are the real speed levers.

I'm a tenant and the landlord won't give documents. What works?

A registered rent agreement is the cleanest; failing that, UIDAI-updated Aadhaar at the address plus bank/utility mail there builds the case, and a landlord's simple consent letter usually suffices where full documents are refused. Chronic mismatch cases should update Aadhaar first — it anchors every later verification.

There's an old closed FIR against me. Will my passport be refused?

Closed/acquitted matters are not refusal grounds — but disclose them and carry the closure/acquittal papers for the verifying officer and RPO. Refusals and impoundings arise from PENDING proceedings without court permission, and from concealment. Honest disclosure + documents = manageable.

A criminal case is pending against me. Can I get a passport at all?

Yes — with the criminal court's permission: a standard application in your pending case seeking leave to obtain/renew a passport (and travel, if needed). Courts grant these routinely for work/family travel with conditions. The GSR framework then lets the RPO issue, commonly a short-validity passport during the case.

The constable demanded money to file a "good" report. What should I do?

You are not required to pay anything — PV is part of your paid passport service. Note the identifiers, report on the state anti-corruption/vigilance helpline and to the SP's office, and continue the normal process; files clear on documents. Paying invites repeat demands and validates the racket.
