How to Get an FIR Copy Online — State Portals, Your Rights and Certified Copies
The informant is entitled to a free FIR copy immediately on registration, and accused persons can obtain it too — the Supreme Court (Youth Bar Association, 2016) directs police to upload FIRs online within 24 hours (72 in remote areas), except in sensitive categories. Every state police website has an FIR view/download section; certified copies come from the station or court for a nominal fee.

The informant gets a copy free of cost, forthwith (Section 154(2) CrPC, now Section 173(2) BNSS). An accused person is entitled to the FIR — via the online upload, the station, or an application to the Magistrate (and in any case with the chargesheet documents under Section 207 CrPC/230 BNSS). Victims who aren't the informant can also obtain it. Refusing the informant a copy is a service violation worth escalating by name.

I am named in an FIR. Can I legally get its copy before arrest?
Yes — the Youth Bar Association directions exist precisely so accused persons can access FIRs early (except sensitive categories); the portal, station, or an application to the jurisdictional Magistrate all work. Getting it early is step zero of the defence — including for anticipatory bail (see that guide).
The portal shows nothing for my FIR number. What now?
Check station/year selectors first (numbering repeats per station per year). If genuinely absent beyond 24–72 hours, apply at the station in writing, and escalate non-upload to the district police grievance cell/DGP portal citing Youth Bar Association — non-sensitive FIRs must be uploaded.
Is a portal printout valid for court or insurance?
For information and most insurance/administrative uses, yes. Courts and some agencies want certified copies — obtain from the copying section for a nominal fee. The certified copy also fixes the authoritative text if portal versions differ.
The FIR records my complaint wrongly. Can it be corrected?
An FIR once registered is not "edited", but you can immediately submit a supplementary written statement to the SHO/SP putting the correct facts on record, which the investigation must consider — and material manipulation is challengeable before the Magistrate. Speed matters; do it before statements and reports stack on the error.
Can I find out if any FIR exists against me at all?
State portals with name-search make it visible; otherwise, a lawyer's check at the district court/police, or an RTI to the district police asking whether any FIR names you (subject to exemptions), surfaces it. Job/visa verifications use police clearance certificates, which run this check formally.
