Bank Deducted Charges Wrongly? Hidden Fees, Reversals and the RBI Ombudsman
Unexplained "service charges", minimum-balance penalties on wrongly-classified accounts, forced-insurance debits and duplicate fees are recoverable: dispute in writing with the branch/grievance cell, escalate to the bank's internal ombudsman, and after 30 days file free with the RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in — which orders reversals and up to ₹1 lakh compensation for deficiency. Banks must publish and follow their schedule of charges.
சட்டப்பூர்வ காலக்கெடுக்கள்

Extract and classify every disputed charge
The statement audit: what, when, under what head.
விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்
Pull 12 months of statements and list each disputed debit: minimum-balance charges (were you told the account's category and MAB requirement? BSBD/zero-balance accounts cannot carry them), "service"/"maintenance" fees not in the schedule of charges, forced insurance/add-on debits you never consented to, SMS/annual-fee duplicates, and auto-converted account upgrades you didn't request. Banks must display their schedule of charges — download it; deviations are your case.

Written complaint up the bank's ladder
Branch → grievance cell → principal nodal officer.
விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்
இதை உங்களுக்காகச் செய்கிறோம் — ₹999Write (email/portal, not just branch visits): itemise the debits, cite the schedule/product terms, demand reversal with interest. No/poor response in ~10 days: escalate to the bank's grievance redressal/principal nodal officer (every bank publishes one). RBI's Charter of Customer Rights and fair-practice circulars bar unilateral, unnotified charges — notice before charge changes is mandatory. Keep the acknowledgement numbers; the clock to the Ombudsman runs on them.

RBI Ombudsman: reversal machinery that works
cms.rbi.org.in — free, binding on the bank, compensation possible.
விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்
After 30 days of no/unsatisfactory resolution, file at cms.rbi.org.in (Integrated Ombudsman Scheme — banks, NBFCs, payment apps all covered) within 1 year: upload the complaint trail and statement extracts. The Ombudsman orders reversals with interest and compensation up to ₹1 lakh for time/harassment in deficiency cases. Deemed acceptance is real: banks that ignore CMS complaints face awards; most settle with a reversal offer within weeks of filing.

Beyond charges: the related recoveries
Unauthorised debits, mis-sold products, consumer forum.
விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்
Unauthorised digital transactions follow the zero-liability circular (report within 3 working days — see our UPI fraud guide). Mis-sold insurance/investment products bundled with loans/lockers: complain for cancellation and refund (free-look periods help if caught early); the Ombudsman handles mis-selling deficiency. For larger patterns or compensation beyond ₹1 lakh, the consumer commission remains open (guide) — banks are service providers, and hidden-charge cases win there with the same paper trail.

இந்தப் பிரச்சினைக்கான இலவச வடிவங்கள்
அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்
Can the bank charge for not maintaining minimum balance without telling me?
No — MAB requirements and penalty schedules must be disclosed at account opening and displayed/notified on change, penalties must be proportionate to the shortfall (RBI directions), and BSBD/zero-balance accounts carry none. Unnotified or disproportionate charges reverse on complaint — banks know this.
I found an insurance premium debiting yearly that I never bought. What now?
Classic bundling mis-sale. Demand the policy documents and your signed consent; absent genuine consent, seek cancellation and full premium refund from bank + insurer (grievance cells of both, then RBI Ombudsman/IRDAI Bima Bharosa). Free-look cancellation applies within 15–30 days of policy receipt if caught early.
How far back can I claim wrongly-deducted charges?
The Ombudsman looks at complaints filed within a year of the bank's final reply, but the underlying claim can cover a longer deduction history raised in that complaint; consumer forums apply the 2-year limitation from knowledge. Practically: claim the full audited list now — banks reverse multi-year MAB/fee errors when the schedule breach is clear.
The bank says charges are "as per terms I accepted". How do I counter?
Ask for the specific term, the schedule version in force at each debit, and proof of notification of changes. Banks often cannot produce consent for upgrades/add-ons or notice of revisions — and unilateral variation without notice violates RBI's fair-practice framework. The gap between "terms exist" and "these debits match them" is where reversals live.
Does this work against payment apps and NBFCs too?
Yes — the Integrated Ombudsman Scheme covers banks, NBFCs and payment-system participants (wallets/UPI apps) in one window at cms.rbi.org.in. Same ladder: written grievance to the entity, 30 days, then CMS.
