How do I recover a hacked WhatsApp account?
Sign in to WhatsApp with your own number and enter the SMS verification code — that alone logs the hacker out, since WhatsApp allows one active registration per number. If the hacker enabled two-step verification you don't know, wait for the 7-day reset or email support@whatsapp.com with "hacked account" and your number.
Instagram hacker changed my email and phone. Is the account gone?
No. Go to instagram.com/hacked and choose "My account was hacked" — Instagram can verify you via a security code to your original contact points or a video selfie matched against your photos, and then reverses the takeover. Recovery may take a few days; keep the reference emails.
Is hacking someone's account a crime even if no money was taken?
Yes. Unauthorised access to an account or device is an offence under Section 66 read with Section 43 of the IT Act, punishable with imprisonment up to 3 years and/or fine. Money extraction adds cheating by personation — Section 419 IPC (now Section 319 BNS) and Section 420 IPC (now Section 318 BNS).
A friend paid money to my hacked account's "emergency" message. Who complains?
Both of you. The friend who paid files the financial fraud complaint (1930 + portal) in their name — only the payer can claim that money trail. You file the hacking/impersonation complaint. Cross-reference each other's acknowledgement numbers so the police see one connected case.
How do I stop this happening again?
Turn on two-step verification (WhatsApp) and 2FA with an authenticator app (Instagram), never share OTPs or "screen share" with strangers, and treat any "vote for my contest / verify your account" link as a phishing attempt — that is how most of these takeovers start.
