A legal name change in India takes three steps: a notarised name-change affidavit (₹20100 stamp paper), publication in two newspapers (one English, one regional — ₹5001,500), and publication in the Gazette of India (₹1,1001,700 typical fees). The full process runs 48 weeks, after which every ID — PAN, Aadhaar, passport — can be updated.

படிப்படியாக: என்ன செய்வது

  1. 1

    Step 1 — the name-change affidavit

Old name, new name, reason — sworn before a notary.

    விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்

The affidavit states your old name, the new name, your address, and the reason (marriage, divorce, astrology/numerology, spelling correction, personal choice — all are acceptable). Execute it on ₹20–100 stamp paper (state-dependent) and get it notarised or sworn before an Oath Commissioner. This affidavit is the foundation document every later step and ID office will ask for. Our ₹199 service drafts it correctly the first time.

  2. 2

Step 2 — publish in two newspapers

One English daily + one regional-language daily.

    விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்

Publish the prescribed announcement — old name, new name, address, affidavit date — in two newspapers: one English daily and one in the local language of your state. Cost is typically ₹500–1,500 for both classified insertions. Buy several original copies of each paper; the Gazette application and some ID offices want originals of the full page carrying the ad, with the masthead and date visible.

  3. 3

Step 3 — Gazette of India notification

The official publication that ends all argument.

    விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்

Apply to the Department of Publication, Govt. of India (egazette.gov.in / dop.nic.in) with the prescribed proforma, affidavit, newspaper originals, photos, ID proof and the fee (₹1,100–1,700 for ordinary publication; state gazettes are an alternative for some purposes). Publication takes 3–6 weeks; you then download the gazette copy carrying your entry. For government employees, the gazette route is mandatory; for passports after marriage, the affidavit + marriage certificate route often suffices without a gazette — check the specific office's rules.

  4. 4

Update every ID in the right order

Gazette in hand, sweep PAN → Aadhaar → passport → banks.

    விவரங்களைப் பார்க்கவும்

With gazette + affidavit + newspaper ads, update: PAN (incometax.gov.in correction), Aadhaar (UIDAI centre — name changes need supporting proof), passport (passportindia.gov.in reissue), then voter ID, driving licence, bank accounts, insurance, property records and educational-board records where applicable (boards have their own correction windows and rules). Keep a folder of 10+ copies of everything — every office keeps a set.

இந்தப் பிரச்சினைக்கான இலவச வடிவங்கள்

அடிக்கடி கேட்கப்படும் கேள்விகள்

Is the Gazette publication compulsory for a name change?

Not always. Government employees must use the gazette route, and it is the strongest universal proof. But many offices accept less for specific cases — passport name change after marriage commonly needs only the marriage certificate and a joint affidavit. When in doubt, or for a complete change of name, do the gazette: it ends all future argument.

How long does the whole process take?

The affidavit is same-day, newspaper ads appear within a week, and gazette publication takes roughly 3–6 weeks from a complete application — so 4–8 weeks end to end. ID updates after that proceed in parallel at each office's own pace.

Can I change my child's name?

Yes — a parent/guardian executes the affidavit and follows the same newspaper + gazette process, with both parents' consent documents typically required. School-board records have their own correction procedures and deadlines, so start with the board's rules if certificates are the goal.

After marriage, must I take my spouse's surname legally?

No — it is entirely optional. If you do adopt it, the marriage certificate plus a joint affidavit handles most updates (passport included) without a gazette. If you later revert after divorce, the full affidavit-ads-gazette route is the clean path.

My documents have different name spellings. Same process?

Yes — minor spelling mismatches (Mohd/Mohammed, missing surname) are fixed with a "one and the same person" affidavit for small cases, or the full name-change process where an authoritative single spelling is needed across IDs. The affidavit is the ₹199 document that solves most of these.
