SIM Swap Fraud — Signs, Emergency Response and Getting Your Money Back
In SIM swap fraud, criminals get a duplicate of your SIM and receive your OTPs — the tell-tale sign is your phone suddenly showing no network for hours. Act in minutes: call your telecom operator from another phone to block the duplicate, call bank hotlines to freeze accounts, then 1930 for any money moved. The RBI zero-liability rules apply — these are unauthorised transactions.
કાનૂની સમયમર્યાદા
- Minutes — Block the duplicate SIM (call the operator from any phone)
- Same hour — Freeze bank/UPI/cards (bank hotlines + apps)
- 24 hours — Call 1930 + portal complaint (for transactions that went through)
- 3 working days — Bank written complaint (zero-liability window)
પગલું-દર-પગલું: શું કરવું
- 1
Recognise it fast
Dead network + OTP/debit alerts on email = swap in progress.

A SIM swap looks like: no network for hours where others have coverage, "SIM registration failed", or a sudden restart demanding activation — often preceded by phishing calls posing as telecom "KYC upgrade". Meanwhile debit alerts pile up on your email (which fraudsters may also try to lock). Any unexplained network death when others have signal deserves the emergency drill, not a wait for "network to come back".

Kill the duplicate SIM, then freeze money
Operator first (it stops the OTP tap), banks second.

From any phone: call your operator's helpline (Airtel 121/198, Jio 199, Vi 199) and report an unauthorised SIM swap — demand immediate blocking of the duplicate and reissue to you with in-store ID verification. Then bank hotlines/apps: freeze cards, UPI and net-banking; change email passwords and enable app-based 2FA (not SMS). Every minute of the duplicate SIM's life is an OTP the fraudster receives.

અમે આ તમારા માટે કરીએ છીએ — ₹199For money already moved: 1930 immediately (freeze attempt), complaint on cybercrime.gov.in, and a written bank complaint within 3 working days — SIM-swap debits are unauthorised electronic transactions squarely inside RBI's zero-liability circular. SIM-swap fraud implicates cheating by personation — Section 419/420 IPC (now Sections 319/318 BNS) — and IT Act Sections 66C (identity theft) and 66D. Ask the operator in writing how the duplicate was issued: KYC lapses there support both your bank claim and liability of the telco.

Recover and harden
Ombudsman escalations both ways; kill SMS-OTP dependence.

Bank stalling? RBI Ombudsman at cms.rbi.org.in after 30 days. Operator stonewalling on how the swap happened? Telecom consumer grievance → appellate authority, and the DoT's Sanchar Saathi portal (sancharsaathi.gov.in) to check/block connections issued in your name. Hardening: app-based authenticators over SMS OTPs, a SIM PIN, email recovery numbers reviewed, and never sharing the "KYC update" codes telecallers ask for — that code IS the swap authorisation.

વારંવાર પૂછાતા પ્રશ્નો
How do fraudsters get a duplicate of my SIM?
Social engineering both ends: they phish your ID details and OTPs ("KYC update" calls), then request a swap/duplicate at the operator with forged documents — or trick YOU into initiating the swap by sharing the confirmation code. Operator KYC lapses feature in most cases, which is why their liability is worth pressing in writing.
Is the bank liable when OTPs went to the fraudster's SIM?
The transactions are unauthorised — you neither made nor authorised them — which is the zero-liability scenario under RBI's circular if reported within 3 working days. Banks argue "OTP was used"; the answer is that the OTP channel itself was hijacked through no negligence of yours. Ombudsmen have repeatedly sided with SIM-swap victims on this.
My number was dead for 6 hours and money is gone. Reporting order?
Operator (kill the duplicate) → banks (freeze) → 1930 (freeze the receiving accounts) → cybercrime portal (written record) → bank's formal complaint letter (zero-liability clock). Then the paper fight: operator's explanation of the swap, bank's response, Ombudsman escalations as needed.
What is Sanchar Saathi and how does it help?
DoT's citizen portal: see every mobile connection issued against your identity, flag ones you never took, and block lost/stolen handsets by IMEI. For SIM-swap victims it documents the fraudulent issuance; for everyone it is a free periodic check that prevents identity-based SIM fraud.
Can I stop relying on SMS OTPs altogether?
Largely yes: switch banking and email 2FA to authenticator apps/hardware where supported, set UPI limits, and use the bank's app-approve mechanisms instead of SMS where offered. SMS OTP is the single point of failure SIM swap exploits — reduce what one hijacked SIM can unlock.
