For any online scam — fake shopping site, work-from-home job fraud, or an investment/trading app that vanished — report on cybercrime.gov.in and call 1930 if money moved, ideally within 24 hours. Complaints are free. For paid products and services, the consumer commission on e-Daakhil is a parallel route within 2 years.

પગલું-દર-પગલું: શું કરવું

  1. 1

    Stop further payments and freeze

Cut every channel the scammer has to you or your money.

    વિગતો જુઓ

Do not pay any "release fee", "tax" or "verification charge" — follow-up demands are part of the script. If money moved, call 1930 immediately and ask your bank to dispute/chargeback the transaction. Block the numbers and profiles, but screenshot everything first.

  2. 2

    Collect evidence before it disappears

Screenshots, payment proofs, URLs, phone numbers, ads.

    વિગતો જુઓ

Save the website/app URL, the ad that hooked you (Instagram/Telegram/WhatsApp), chats, the receiver UPI IDs/account numbers, and your payment records (UTR numbers). Scam pages get deleted fast — your screenshots become the primary evidence for the police and the bank.

  3. 3

    Report on cybercrime.gov.in

One national portal covers shopping, job and investment frauds.

    વિગતો જુઓ

File under "Report Other Cybercrime" or financial fraud at cybercrime.gov.in with your evidence bundle. Online cheating is Section 420 IPC (now Section 318 BNS); impersonation online adds IT Act Section 66D. Job frauds demanding fees and fake investment platforms are the same offence dressed differently. Track the acknowledgement number; escalate to your local cyber cell if nothing moves in 2–3 weeks.

Use the consumer route in parallel

Paid for a product/service that never came? e-Daakhil also applies.

Where you paid a business for goods/services (fake or non-delivering shopping sites, paid "job placement" services), you are also a consumer: complain via the National Consumer Helpline 1915 and file on e-Daakhil within 2 years. Claims up to ₹5 lakh have no court fee. See our consumer forum guide for the full process.

વારંવાર પૂછાતા પ્રશ્નો

Where do I complain about an online scam in India?

The National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (cybercrime.gov.in) is the single national channel; call 1930 first if money moved so it can be frozen. For paid products/services, the consumer commission via e-Daakhil is a parallel remedy, and the National Consumer Helpline (1915) mediates free.

I paid a fee for a work-from-home job that turned out fake. Is that a crime?

Yes — collecting money on a false promise of employment is cheating under Section 420 IPC (now Section 318 BNS). Report on cybercrime.gov.in with the ad, chats and payment proof. Genuine employers do not charge registration or training deposits before hiring.

The scam website has vanished. Can anything still be done?

Yes. Your payment trail is the anchor: the receiving account exists even after the site is gone, and can be frozen or traced by the bank and police. This is why screenshots, UTR numbers and receiver details taken early matter so much.

Can I get a chargeback for a card payment to a scam site?

Often, yes. Dispute the transaction with your card issuer immediately, citing fraud/non-delivery — card network rules allow chargebacks within tight windows. Attach your cybercrime complaint acknowledgement; it materially strengthens the dispute.

Investment app showed profits but blocks withdrawal unless I pay "tax". Should I pay?

No. The displayed profit is fake and the "tax"/"withdrawal fee" is the actual extraction step of the scam. Stop paying, preserve the app screenshots and payment trail, call 1930 for the amounts already paid, and file the portal complaint.
